The cross-cultural hockey drama set in the Indo-Canadian community of suburban Toronto is being directed by Canadian Robert Lieberman.

The film follows a hero caught between a family's traditional expectations and a dream to make it in the national sport of his adopted country.

The film has its roots set in Akshay's longstanding bond with Canadian culture and his evergreen passion –sports.

Says a source "Akshay was impressed with Lowe's work on the sitcom Brothers and Sisters and thought that he would be apt to play the role of an ice hockey champ."

Akshay Kumar says, "The film expresses in a wonderful way the crossing of two great cultures, it has a brilliant International cast and crew, and I really feel this will touch a lot of hearts in Hollywood…"

The film will also co-star stand-up comic and actor Russell Peters in a special appearance.

Breakaway began principle photography on Monday, September 20, 2010 and is scheduled to launch in the fall of 2011 by Alliance Films in Canada and Hari Om Entertainment in India.
